The Nightingale and the Rose is a one-act folk opera written by Benjamin Scheuer, who adapted the piece from the eponymous Oscar Wilde short story. The opera’s primary text is Wilde’s, with additional text from John Keats’ poem “Ode to a Nightingale,” and text written by Scheuer.

Synopsis. A wonderful nightingale is invited to sing at the Emperor of China’s court. However, the emperor decides he prefers a mechanical bird. Devastated, the nightingale flees the court.
